HazTek Solves ‘Poison Soil’ Problems to Solarize Farm

  • Client/Project: Petrocelli Electric/Seabrook Farm Solar Project
  • Service: General Consulting
  • Term of Contract: August 2010 to November 2010
  • Locations: Seabrook (Bridgeton), N.J.

Challenge:

A large northeastern farm wanted to produce all the power they needed through solar energy. The 21-acre site they selected had been a peach orchard, and the soil was contaminated by the arsenic that naturally occurs in peach pits.

case-study-ImageSolution:

The client, a privately owned, multi-disciplined electrical contractor, hired us to draft a Site Specific Health and Safety Plan that met both client requirements and OSHA regulations.
In addition to safety consultation, HazTek conducted bi-weekly safety audits that included scheduled and unscheduled walk-throughs, inspections and interviews, covering both equipment and work processes, and identified and prevented worksite hazards.

Results:

The 6,000 acre farm now produces all the electricity it needs, using 27,000 solar panels installed on 21 acres without a single accident or injury, resulting in a Total Recordable Incidence Rate (TRIR) of 0.00. Based on the success of this and other projects together, the client has continued to retain HazTek to create proactive safety cultures at job sites throughout the Northeast. This partnership allows the client to focus on its core business, while HazTek focuses on safety.
