The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), with support from the National Safety Council and dozens of other groups, asks employers to take a few minutes to discuss fall protection and safety when working from heights to prevent falls during the National Fall Safety Stand-Down week, which took place May 2 – 6, 2016.
An OSHA-recommended Safety Stand-Down event serves as a reminder to follow appropriate standards and to use caution so that workers’ lives are not put at risk. The 90-minute presentation at General Motors included components of fall arrest system, calculating fall distance, proper selection of equipment for the job, inspection frequency, and rescue.
The OSHA program was originally a two-year effort, launched on Workers’ Memorial Day in 2012, to raise awareness of preventing fall hazards in construction. The event was so successful that it continues annually at the start of every construction season.
