HazTek, Inc.

The Rahway Suite of Demolition Projects included extensive demolition of multi-story brick/concrete buildings and factories. This demolition included difficult removal of major equipment to be sold or scrap, asbestos abatement, utility disconnects, LO/TO, piping line breaks cleaning and safe off and protection of adjacent structures. Extensive planning and coordination by the Team was required to execute these demo projects safely. The Project Team completed all work without any injuries expending 24,622 construction hours. Some of the key programs and initiatives to their safety success were:

1) Proactive Teamwork and extensive pre-planning of all major work and demolition activities on the Rahway demolition projects was achieved through complete cooperation between Owner, CM, and Contractors.

2) All stake holders took the time to collaborate ideas on best practices and areas which could be improved fostering a positive change and a proactive safety culture.

3) The Team always remembered this is a partnership and led by showing commitment to safety every day. In order to insure a safe working environment, a dedicated partnership between GES, CM, and Contractor is vital. Being visible in our safety tours, maintaining a local safety committee and giving positive recognition to our contractors and CM's will continue this commitment.

4) Our daily meetings with the contractors which include reviewing work plans, and JSAs, have also been beneficial in obtaining our goal. Our safety culture was accomplished by creating trust with our contractors in correcting unsafe behavior in our workplace. Changing contractors attitudes has also played a major role in making our safety culture what it is today.
