OSHA's Top 10 Workplace Safety Violations for 2010 - Not Much Different from 2009 E-mail

 

The following is a list of the top 10 most frequently cited standards following inspections of work sites by OSHA. OSHA publishes this list to alert employers about these commonly cited standards so they can take steps to find and fix recognized hazards addressed in these and other standards before OSHA shows up.

 

Not much has changed since 2009 in terms of most frequently cited standards, just the order in which they ranked that changed slightly. Now is a great time to review your work procedures and evaluate whether your company is in jeopardy of any of these or other OSHA violations:

 

  1. 1926.451 – Scaffolding - Lack of proper fall protection, fall arrest or guardrail systems and improper platform construction & support

  2. 1926.501 – Fall Protection - Failure to provide guardrail, safety net or personal fall arrest system on roofs and wall openings

  3. 1910.1200 – Hazard Communication - Failure to provide a written program, adequate training, material safety data sheets and labels for each hazardous chemical

  4. 1910.134 – Respiratory Protection - Failure to establish safety program, conduct medical evaluation and provide fit-testing and training

  5. 1926.1053 – Ladders - For using ladders for a purpose other than for which they were designed, using the top of a stepladder as a step and failing to mark ladders with structural defects

  6. 1910.147 – Lockout/Tagout - Failure to establish LOTO safety program, develop procedures for energy control, conduct employee training and periodic inspections

  7. 1910.305 – Electrical, Wiring Methods - Failure to provide appropriate covers for pull boxes, junction boxes and fittings, use flexible cords and cables properly and properly apply temporary wiring installations

  8. 1910.178 – Powered Industrial Trucks - Failure to ensure truck operator is competent, provide refresher training and evaluate each operator at least once every three years and failure to evaluate and take defective or unsafe trucks out of service for repair

  9. 1910.303 – Electrical, General Requirements - Failure to install or use equipment in accordance with factory instructions, insufficient access or working space, failure to guard live parts and ensure electrical equipment is free from recognized hazards

  10. 1910.212 – Machine Guarding - Failure to provide one or more methods of machine guarding, guard at point of operation, anchor fixed machinery and guard fan blades
